Andrew's Birthday Weekend

Last year for Andrew's birthday we went skiing at Massanutten. So, this year we decided to upgrade a little to a better mountain. We went to Snowshoe in West Virginia. It was a perfect day for skiing. It was pretty warm and comfortable. I didn't even get to use my hand and toe warmers until night skiing. I am glad we went on Saturday because we talked to different people on the lift rides and they told us that the power had gone out the night before and people were stuck on the lifts with 40 mph winds and freezing temperatures. That sounds pretty miserable to me.

I would recommend Snowshoe if you are looking for a place to ski. But, we just need to warn you that they have poor "signage", or rather, a lack of signs and information. We skiied on this (refering to the pictures) side of the mountain for the first part of the morning. We thought it seemed kind of small from what we had seen online. So, we asked a ski patrol guy and he said we needed to take a shuttle to the main Snowshoe Mountain. Well, who knew! We got to the other mountain and it was huge. They had tons of trails and along the top of the mountain was a cute, but big, village full of restaurants, shops and condos. There is even a lake at the bottom of the trails. It was really nice. We had other problems due to their lack of signage. We didn't know where to park, where to get our skis and lift tickets or which trails were which and where they took us. So, we are considering writing a letter to Snowshoe. But, all in all, it was a great trip.

We ended up not staying at the Snowshoe resort. They were all booked up. So, we found this great Bed and Breakfast called, "The Jerico." It was about 30 minutes away from Snowshoe, but it was a great place to stay. We would definitely stay again. You can kind of see some garland wrapped around their sign. Their dining room was still decorated for Christmas as well. We saw several houses on our way through West Virginia that still had up Christmas decorations. I guess things just move a little slower in West Virginia.

We stayed in this main house (you can kind of see it through the trees).

But, there are also little cabins around their property that you can stay in as well. They are pre-civil wars cabins. But, don't worry, they have electicity, kitchens and even hot tubs.

This is what our room looked like. We even had our own bathroom, which isn't always possible in Bed and Breakfasts.

Some of the decor was new and updated and some were still pretty old, like these chairs. But, it was cozy and perfect after a full day of skiing.
